FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Methodist men's tennis team completed day two of the Methodist 2-of-3 challenge on Saturday afternoon.
In the main draw, freshman
Taylor Buchholz and senior
Robert Clayton defeated Meiler/Rapp of Guilford by winning both singles matches after falling, 8-6, in the doubles portion. Buchholz produced a 6-3, 6-1 win in singles and Clayton posted a 6-4, 6-1 win. Their tournament run came to an end in the quarterfinal round as they fell to the duo of Bub and Mariano of Mt. Olive. Bub and Mariano took the doubles point, 8-4, then posted a 6-1, 1-6, 10-6 win at “A” singles and a 6-2, 6-2 win at “B” singles.
Juniors
Duncan Miller and
Greg Patterson also advanced to the quarterfinals, defeating Velasco and Radu of Barton before falling to Santana and Robb of Mt. Olive. Against the team from Barton, Miller and Patterson rallied from an 8-4 loss in the doubles portion to win 2-6, 6-3, 10-5 and 7-6, 6-0 in the singles portion.
In the consolation draw, freshman
Teal Howard and junior
Kurt Robinson advanced to the semifinals with an 8-0 win in doubles and 6-4, 4-6, 10-3 and 6-2, 7-6 wins in singles over Brvenik and Hamilton of Guilford. The duo will take on Villalta and Castillo of Pfeifer on Sunday with a berth in the finals at large.
The final day of play is set to begin on Sunday.
