Women's Tennis Falls to No. 5 Emory

Monarchs finish the season 22-4

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Methodist women's tennis team took on fifth ranked Emory University in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Saturday morning, but lost 5-0. The Monarchs wrap up the 2011-12 season at 22-4, marking the third straight season to finish with more than 20 wins.

The Eagles took the early lead 3-0 lead after doubles. Methodist's Kelli Shelton and Stacey Brooks lost 8-0 and the region's top ranked team knocked off the Monarchs' Katherine Meindl and Laura Baker 8-0. Dana Powell and Rachel Purser won a game over the fifth ranked doubles team, but lost 8-1 at number two.

Emory went ahead 4-0 after earning a 6-0, 6-1 win at number six singles over Emily Talley. Emory's Gabrielle Clark clinched the win with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Meindl at number one singles. Four of Emory's top six singles players are ranked in the region's top 25 led by Clark's number one ranking. Once the match was decided, it was halted with Purser, Baker and Powell still in action. Purser had dropped the first set 6-0 and was tied 1-1 in the second. Baker had lost 6-0 and was down 2-1 in the second while Powell had lost the first set 6-0.

Emory advances to face the winner of Washington and Lee and Ohio Northern in the third round on Sunday.
