Baker was a member of a Monarch men's golf team that made appearances in the NCAA championship each of his four years with the program. A two-time All-American (1983, 1984), Baker was a 1984 first-team USA South All-Conference player who also finished in the runner-up position at that season's conference tournament.
His team finished as the national runner-up at the 1984 NCAA Division III tournament, the program's highest national finish until breaking through for its first NCAA championship in 1990.
