Monarchs Hold Off Oglethorpe For 1-0 Win

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist men's soccer team kicked off the 2008 season with a 1-0 win over Oglethorpe as part of the Sonny Carter Invitational at Emory on Saturday. The Monarchs start the season 1-0 while Oglethorpe moves to 1-1.

Oglethorpe out shot the Monarchs 13-8, but it was Methodist who scored on an unassisted goal from senior James Gunderson in the 28th minute of the game. Freshman goalkeeper Cory Harrison made nine saves in his debut helping the Monarchs to the shutout victory.

The Monarchs' only shot on goal of the game was Gunderson's goal leaving Oglethorpe goalkeeper Michael Hadjisimos without a save.

The Monarchs will face Emory on Sunday at 1:30 pm.
