Men's Soccer Holds Off St. Mary's 3-1

Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist men's soccer team took an early 2-0 lead and held off St. Mary's College of Maryland for a 3-1 win.

The Monarchs (5-1-2) dominated the first half out shooting the Seahawks (5-4) 15-2. Eirik Nordseth scored the first goal of the game in the 34th minute after an assist from Chris Ryan. Eric McGinnis gave the Monarchs a 2-0 lead after Nordseth's cross went through the St. Mary's goalkeeper's hands. Methodist held the 2-0 lead at halftime, but it was St. Mary's who struck first in the second half. The Monarchs were unable to clear a ball sent in by the Seahawks before St. Mary's Tommy Krug cleaned it up with a goal in the 67th minute. St. Mary's continued to press, but the Monarchs withstood the pressure. With less than a minute remaining, Methodist's Nahom Hargwoon took the ball up the right sideline and crossed a ball over the Seahawks' defense to Nordseth's feet and Nordseth clinched the win with his second goal of the game.

Methodist's Kyle Beach played the first 20 minutes in goal before Patrick Hamel finished the game with one save. Austin Brown had seven saves for St. Mary's.

Methodist will take the road this weekend when they open USA South Athletic Conference action on Saturday at Shenandoah.
