FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Methodist University, under the direction of seventh-year Head Coach
Francie Barragan, was picked to capture the 2012 USA South Athletic Conference women's tennis title in the preseason coaches' poll. Last spring, the Monarchs captured both the USA South Regular Season and Tournament championships for the second consecutive season.
Methodist received seven of ten first-place votes and 79 total points as head coaches do not vote for their own teams in the balloting. Meredith College finished second in the balloting with 74 points and two first-place votes while Christopher Newport University followed in third with 64 points and the final first-place vote. N.C. Wesleyan College secured fourth place with 59 points while Averett University rounded out the top-half of the poll in fifth with 42 points.
The Monarchs had a tremendous year in 2010-11 finishing 25-2 overall and an undefeated 8-0 in the USA South. Barragan returns six of her seven starters having just lost graduate and Methodist career wins leader
Kaitlin Flaherty. The Monarchs will open the spring season Feb. 12 when they host Mt. Olive College.
The 2012 USA South Women's Tennis Tournament will once again be played at the Burlington Tennis Center in Burlington, North Carolina on April 13-15.
