Meredith Slips Past Methodist Women's Soccer

Whitney Roberson scored Monarchs' only goal

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Meredith College scored the game-winning goal in the final 30 seconds of play to slip by the Monarchs 2-1 in the USA South Tournament semifinal.

After a scoreless first half, the Monarchs took a 1-0 lead in the 48th minute on a goal by junior Whitney Roberson.  Ayla Koc tied it for the Avenging Angels in the 76th minute on an assist from Kristin Braxton.  Methodist had a corner kick opportunity in a few minutes later and freshman Danielle Minichello's shot missed wide in the 86th minute.  It was Meredith's Alex Calvert who found the game-winner with 29 seconds to go in the game.

Methodist goalkeeper Kasey Nichols had three saves while Sarah Chadwick had one stop for the Avenging Angels.

Meredith advances to the Tournament Championships Saturday at 7 pm.

At the conclusion of the tournament, Whitney Roberson was named to the All-Tournament team.
