McLean Foundation MU Coach of the Year

Purpose

Beginning with the 2008-09 academic year, Methodist University recognizes its ongoing commitment to a campus-wide culture of excellence extends to all areas of its campus. It is, therefore, appropriate to identify and recognize athletic head coaches who have shown a commitment to excellence in the knowledge of their discipline, method of instruction, attitude, and interaction with students, both on and off the field. The McLean Foundation Coach of the Year Award is Methodist University's highest athletic coaching award. A permanent plaque will also be displayed in the Athletic Department with the annual winners on display. The award will be presented at the Fall Convocation each year by the President of MU or his/her designee.

Eligibility

Prior to the 2024-25 academic year, only current MU head coaches with a minimum of three years of head coaching experience at MU will be eligible for the award. A head coach may only win the award once every four years.

Beginning with the 2024-25 academic year, all current MU head coaches are eligible for the award. A head coach may only win the award once every other year.

Criteria for Selection

The head coach must have demonstrated during the year outstanding achievement in the following areas:
    1. Outstanding team performance to include any conference, regional, and/or national championships or rankings.
    2. The team will display exemplary good sportsmanship.
    3. The coach will have a team that performs well in the classroom at a rate considered outstanding by the selection committee.
    4. The team will show a record of meaningful multiple community service/volunteer activities throughout the year.
    5. The coach will show evidence of campus and departmental event participation, as well as being active in their respective coaches’ professional         association at the conference, regional, and/or national level.
    6. The coach will manage their sport in such a way as to show outstanding recruit/retention numbers in their program.
    7. The coach will abide by and not have any violations of NCAA rules or MU policies.
