FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Head women's soccer coach
Bryan Madej has been named the 2023 Methodist University Thomas R. and Elizabeth E. McLean Foundation Coach of the Year, as announced by Vice President and Director of Athletics Dave Eavenson on Tuesday. Madej becomes the 11th unique coach to receive the honor in its 15-year history.
The award, voted on by a committee composed of Methodist University faculty and staff from outside of the Athletic Department, annually recognizes a head coach who has shown involvement in campus events and their respective sport's professional associations, demonstrated excellent recruitment and retention within their program, and led a team that exhibited outstanding athletic and academic performance during its season and throughout the school year.
During the 2022 season, Madej guided his team to a 13-2-1 record over the course of the regular season, including a perfect 9-0 mark against conference opponents for the second straight season. Earning the right to host the USA South Tournament, the top-seeded Monarchs narrowly escaped an upset in the semifinal round, winning in overtime, before advancing to the championship and claiming victory to earn the team's second conference tournament title during Madej's tenure and a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Winning the USA South Coach of the Year award for the first time in his career, Madej coached eight student-athletes to All-Conference honors in 2022 (five first-teamers and three second-teamers), including
Corrine Shovlain, who was named the USA South Player of the Year. He also had six players named to the USA South All-Tournament team.
Madej is a 2008 graduate of Methodist University and was a student-athlete on the men's soccer team from 1999-2002. He served as an assistant coach on the men's soccer team from 2005-2009 before being appointed as the head coach of the women's team ahead of the 2010 season. His overall record as a head coach stands at 130-87-13, while his record versus conference foes is 80-32-10.
Madej will be recognized at a home soccer match this fall.
