Monarchs Shut Out Peace

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Monarchs took the early lead in the first minute of play over Peace and tacked on seven goals in the second half to win 8-0.

It only took 49 seconds, but Methodist sophomore Danielle Minichello scored the first goal of the game with an assist from senior Whitney Roberson. Neither team scored during the remainder of the half giving the Monarchs (9-8-1, 5-2-1) the 1-0 lead at halftime.

Methodist came out firing in the second half and sophomore Jillian Reed crossed the ball from the left side for Minichello to flick onto freshman Kayla Hahn who ripped a shot past the Peace goalkeeper. Minichello scored the next two goals just 1:17 apart splitting the Peace defense with an assist from senior Ashley Kolano. Peace (1-14, 1-7) kept battling, but Reed scored on a shot to the left post on an assist from senior Erica Nath. Minichello scored a record-tying fourth goal in the 62nd minute on a diving first touch on the cross from Reed after a free kick from junior Kelly Orpin. Hahn scored her second goal of the day in the 63rd minute on an assist from Reed and sophomore Lauren Colenda finished the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 74th minute.

Methodist goalkeeper Sara Altman made two saves to preserve the shutout while Sherry Revels had 12 saves for Peace.

Minichello finished with four goals and an assist while Reed scored a goal with three assists on the day.

The Monarchs will finish the regular season at Greensboro Friday.
