MARYVILLE, Tenn. - Methodist closed a nine-point gap early in the first half to tie the game at 13, but Maryville ran away with a 94-52 win to open up the 2009-10 men's basketball season.

The Scots came out strong jumping out to an early 13-4 lead before the Monarchs put together a run and tied the game on a three-pointer from sophomore Tanner Carnes. Maryville built up a 17-point lead with just under five minutes remaining in the half, but the Monarchs cut the lead to 10. Methodist came up empty on their next seven possessions for the Scots to hold the 50-29 lead at halftime.

Methodist could not trim the lead early in the second half and the Scots just extended their lead before finishing with the 94-52 win. Maryville was dominant on the boards, out rebounding Methodist 49-28.

Carnes paced the Monarchs with 21 points and six rebounds while senior Eric Thomas had 10 points and four rebounds.

The Monarchs will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Guilford for a 7 pm tip-off.
