ASHLAND, Va. - After trailing by 12 at halftime, Methodist cut the lead to six early in the second half, but Randolph-Macon pulled away for the 74-50 win.
The Monarchs (0-3) started off slow as the Yellow Jackets ran out to an 11-0 lead in the first four and a half minutes. Methodist cut the lead to five on a jumper from junior
Dawn Sanderson with 9:46 to play, but Randolph-Macon (2-0) took their largest lead of the half at 26-12 with less than seven remaining in the half. They took a 35-23 lead into the locker room at the break.
Early in the second half Methodist came back and trimmed the lead to six with a free throw from senior
Dezzire Gilliard but the Yellow Jackets ran away with it late to earn the 74-50 win.
Randolph-Macon was strong from the free throw line finishing 24-for-27 for nearly 89 percent. Methodist senior
Michaela Myers led the Monarchs with 16 points on 4-for-7 shooting from behind the arc while juniors
Adriana Wilson and
Kayla Thompson added six points a piece. Sanderson led the team on the boards with five rebounds.
Methodist will travel to Salem College on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
