ATLANTA, Ga. - Methodist was hoping to earn its first win on Sunday afternoon, but after coming from behind to send the game to overtime, Oglethorpe responded with the 87-85 win.
Methodist (0-4) came out with the early lead jumping ahead 18-12 with 9:39 to go in the first half after a shot from freshman
Bruce Patterson. The Petrels (1-1) came back and tied the game at 20 but the Monarchs regained the lead. Oglethorpe led at 30-29 with less than three minutes in the half, but Methodist took a 33-30 lead at the break.
The Monarchs'
Tanner Carnes scored the first four points of the second half to put Methodist up by seven, but it was Oglethorpe who took their first lead of the half at 46-44 with 14:31 to go. The Petrels went up by as many as 11 points, but could not close out as Methodist began chipping away at the lead. It was free throws down the stretch as sophomore
Devonne Blackshear tied the game at 75 with 18 seconds left on the clock. Oglethorpe would have another opportunity, but the shot would not go, sending the game to overtime.

Marc Slade with 1:08 remaining. Oglethorpe's Alec Pitts converted two free throws of his own to tie the game at 85 and after a Monarch turnover, Oglethorpe scored a layup with six seconds on the clock. Methodist head coach
David Smith called a timeout, but the Monarchs' final opportunity came up short with Oglethorpe taking the 87-85 win.
Carnes finished with 25 points and seven rebounds for the Monarchs while junior
Travis Fulp scored 17 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the floor. Sophomore
Mark Jernigan added 11 points and five rebounds.
Methodist will host their first home game on Saturday against the Piedmont Lions at 3 pm.
