FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist University men's basketball team hosted Athletes in Action, a global Sports Ministry, in an exhibition Wednesday night.
Athletes in Action hosts college and professional athletes to use the platform of sport to help people with questions of faith. The team, made up of former NCAA Division I and II players is currently on a fall tour scheduled to play 16 games in 19 days.
Athletes in Action jumped out to the early 7-0 lead before the Monarchs got on the board with a 3-pointer from sophomore
Mark Jernigan. Methodist battled back to move within five at 14-9, but Athletes in Action took control to hold the 56-34 advantage at halftime.
Methodist tried to get things going early in the second half when junior
Marc Slade scored an early layup, but Athletes in Action ran away with it late. They finished shooting 54 percent from the field and nearly 46 percent from behind the arc while earning the 107-58 win.
Jernigan led the Monarchs with 13 points while senior
Tyler Sigman and freshman
Steven Kerr had eight points a piece. Junior
Paul Bernard led the team on the boards with five while Slade added four.
The Monarchs will tip off the 2009-10 season at Maryville Nov. 15.
