Monarchs Come Up Short in Overtime Loss

WINCHESTER, Va. - Methodist had the lead but the Shenandoah Hornets forced overtime and overcame the Monarchs to win 66-63 Saturday night.

Both teams exchanged baskets early in the first half before Methodist built an eight point lead on a 3-pointer from senior #A.B. Lehmann# in the final minutes of the half.  Shenandoah hit a jumper at the buzzer to cut the lead to six at halftime.

Senior Alex Meadows put the Monarchs up by 13 points with 5:53 to go in the game, but the Hornets went on a 9-0 run to cut the lead to four points. Freshman Mark Jernigan scored to give Methodist the six point cushion.  Both teams missed multiple shots before Shenandoah hit two 3-pointers to tie the game with 1:45 left to play. The clock ticked down with neither team able to break the tie, sending the game to overtime.

Jernigan scored first in overtime, but Shenandoah came back with a three to go up by one. The Hornets hit two free throws to take the 66-63 lead and the Monarchs could not make up the deficit.

Jernigan led the team with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Meadows scored 15 points and Lehmann added 10.

The Monarchs tied for fourth in the conference earning the sixth seed in the USA South Tournament.  Methodist will play at Ferrum on Tuesday at 7:30 pm.
