GREENSBORO, N.C. - Methodist took the lead in the second half, but Greensboro came back and knocked off the Monarchs 56-53 at Hanes Gymnasium Wednesday night.
Midway through the first half Greensboro (8-11, 2-5) had a six point lead and led by as many as nine during the half. Methodist sophomore
Marcus Connor cut the lead to four with a layup in the final 10 seconds before halftime. The Pride led 32-28 at the break.
The Monarchs (8-12, 3-4) came back out in the second half continuing their push for the lead. Junior
Tyler Sigman gave Methodist the 38-36 advantage, their first lead of the game with 16:20 to go in the game. There would be five more lead changes during the remainder of the half as both teams exchanged baskets. Freshman
Mark Jernigan gave Methodist the 53-51 lead with 3:57 remaining, but the Pride came right back and tied it on a fastbreak to the other end of the court. Both teams went scoreless for nearly three minutes before Greensboro's Adam Powell put the Pride up by two with 52 seconds on the clock. The Monarchs were forced to foul and trailing 56-53, Methodist was unable to find the game-tying basket.
Sigman paced the Monarchs with 16 points while sophomore
Leland Jones added 12. Jernigan had nine rebounds.
The Monarchs will host Ferrum on Saturday at 4 pm.
