Monarchs Fall to Farmingdale State

Jernigan breaks out for 26 points

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. - The Methodist men's basketball team fell short in their bid for their first win on Saturday when Farmingdale State College took the 89-82 win in the Tip-Off Consolation Game.

The first half featured 10 lead changes and the two teams were tied on six different occasions. Methodist took a six point lead with 13:34 remaining in the first half after a layup from Bryan Hockaday. The score was tied at 30 before the Rams finished the half with a 44-39 lead.

The Monarchs opened the second half with five straight points on a three from James Whitehead and a layup by Kyle Combs, but Farmingdale State slowly built a 10 point lead. Travis Fulp cut the gap to three with a 3-pointer with less than a minute to play, but Methodist went 0-for-3 in an attempt to tie the game. The Rams held on for the 89-82 win.

Mark Jernigan led all scorers with 26 points and eight rebounds. Combs added 10 points and seven boards.

The Monarchs will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Lynchburg at 6 p.m.
