Methodist Women Hold On For 52-50 Victory

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Methodist women's basketball ended a four game losing streak on Saturday with a 52-50 conference win over Shenandoah University.

Methodist (3-5, 1-1) opened the game with a 12-1 lead through the first seven minutes before going on an 11 minute scoring drought. The Hornets held the 17-12 lead before Jackie Lyles ended the drought with a steal and layup with 1:55 to play in the half. A free throw on the play from Lyles and a layup by Iesha Hayes tied the game at 17 just before halftime.

Shenandoah (2-5, 0-2) took their last lead of the game at 23-22 with 18:06 to play before Methodist controlled the remainder of the half. Methodist went ahead 40-34 with just under seven minutes left on free throws by Dawn Sanderson. The Hornets consistently cut the lead to two, but could not move any closer as the Monarchs led 52-45 with 14 seconds remaining. Shenandoah scored a layup and a last second 3-pointer to move within two, but the Monarchs held on for the 52-50 win.

The Monarchs finished with three players in double figures with Sanderson leading the way at 15 points. Hayes finished with 13 points and Lyles scored 12 points with seven rebounds. #T.T. Taylor# also added seven boards.

Mandy Johnston paced the Hornets with 17 points.

Methodist will be back in action on Sunday when they host Mary Baldwin College at 3 p.m.
