ATLANTA, Ga. - Methodist made a late push in the waning moments, but Emory held on for the 88-82 win on Saturday afternoon.
Emory (6-0) jumped out to the 19-10 lead in the first seven minutes, but the Monarchs (0-6) went on a 7-0 run capped off by a layup by
Tanner Carnes with 10:07 left to play. The Eagles led by as many as 12 points in the half before Methodist closed the lead to seven at the break.
The Monarchs moved within two points again early in the second half, but Emory extended their lead back to 11. Methodist's
Josh Hayes hit the 3-pointer with 26 seconds left to move within four points at 82-78. Emory's Austin Claunch hit two free throws and Carnes responded with a layup to move back to within four at 84-80. Methodist was called for a foul and Emory's bench was subsequently called for a technical sending both teams to the free throw line. The Monarchs trailed 86-82 with 15 seconds left, but an Eagle turnover set up a layup to seal the 88-82 win for Emory.
Mark Jernigan led the Monarchs with 29 points and seven rebounds. Carnes scored 14 points while Hayes added 10 points.
Alex Greven paced Emory with 31 points while Claunch added 17 points.
Methodist will be back in action on Sunday when they play at Piedmont at 2 p.m.
