Monarchs Earn 66-61 Win Over Piedmont

DEMOREST, Ga. - The Methodist men's basketball team picked up their first win of the season with a 66-61 win over Piedmont College Sunday afternoon.

Piedmont opened the game with a 20-12 lead, but the Monarchs came back with a 13-5 run to tie the game at 25 with 5:53 to play in the first half. Methodist went on to take the 37-34 lead into the locker room at halftime after a jumper by freshman Bryan Hockaday in the final 30 seconds.

The Lions regained the lead briefly early in the second half, but Methodist responded and built a 12 point lead of their own. Piedmont moved within three points in the final minute of play, but Methodist's Mark Jernigan scored with the 13 seconds remaining to preserve the 66-61 win.

Jernigan averaged more than 30 points a game this weekend after scoring 29 on Saturday and 32 on Sunday. Hockaday added 10 points while Kyle Combs led the team on the boards with 11 rebounds.

Piedmont had two players in double figures led by Tracey Gardner with 16 points.

Methodist will be back in action on Sunday when they host Maryville College at 5 p.m.
