Monarchs Avenge Panthers With 80-74 Win

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist men's basketball team turned the tables on Ferrum Monday night earning an 80-74 win at the Riddle Center.

Methodist freshman Kyle Combs gave the Monarchs a seven point lead midway through the first with the putback in the lane. Ferrum (9-11, 3-5) briefly took the lead at 29-28, but the Monarchs' Mark Jernigan scored at the other end to regain the lead. Methodist freshman Ross Diachenko drained a 3-pointer in the final minute to tie the game at 39 at halftime.

The second half was back and forth for the full 20 minute period with neither team gaining control until the final minutes. Jernigan tied the game at 67 with 4:01 to play and the Monarchs kept their composure under pressure to hold on to the lead.  Methodist (2-17, 2-5) went ahead by nine with 50 seconds on the clock with two free throws from senior Tyler Sigman. Ferrum kept chipping away, but the Monarchs finished with their second straight win at 80-74.

Sigman paced the Monarchs with 22 points and six rebounds while Jernigan added 20 points. Diachenko and Combs also finished in double figures with 12 and 11 points respectively.

Derek Mitchell finished with 18 points and 14 boards for Ferrum.

The Monarchs will travel to Averett on Saturday for a 4 p.m. tip-off.
