FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - It took 45 minutes, but the Methodist men's basketball team took the 78-76 win over Shenandoah University Friday night.
Methodist jumped out to the early 11-4 lead with a layup from sophomore
Devonne Blackshear. The Monarchs led by as many as nine points before Shenandoah took the 27-26 lead with 2:27 to go in the half. Methodist regained the lead and held the 34-31 advantage at the break.
The Monarchs took control early in the second half and went ahead 45-37 with 13:23 on the clock. The Hornets went ahead midway through the period before Blackshear tied the game at 61 with 3:13 remaining. The final three minutes were back and forth before Methodist held the 67-65 lead with 58 seconds on the clock. Shenandoah had one final possession with 8.7 seconds to go and forced overtime with a layup from Chris Schrader.
The Hornets scored the first basket of overtime, but Methodist went ahead 75-71 on a free throw from sophomore
Tanner Carnes. Shenandoah scored to cut the lead to two, but Methodist hit free throws down the stretch to hold the 78-76 win.
Carnes paced the Monarchs with 23 points and 13 rebounds while sophomore
Mark Jernigan added 21 points.
Kenny Robertson led the Hornets with 18 points.
The Monarchs will finish out the regular season on Saturday when they host Christopher Newport at 6 p.m.
