FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Methodist picked up two big wins over Stevenson University on Saturday 7-2 and 8-0.
Trey Such gave Methodist the 2-0 lead in the first inning with a shot over the fence in center field.
Tripp Lancaster singled in the third and scored on a ground out before Such hit his second home run of the day to left center.
Brian Halpin kept the rally going reaching second on an error and moved to third on a bunt single from
Brian Goodwin. Halpin scored the Monarchs' fifth run of the game on a single by
Tyler Younger.
Methodist added two runs in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly from
Brian Inghram and a RBI from Such for the 7-0 advantage. Stevenson came back with two runs in the sixth, but the Monarchs finished with the 7-2 win.
Such went 2-for-3 in the game with four RBI. Mayo also hit 2-for-3 while Lancaster was 2-for-4.
Kurt Kelly picked up his eighth win of the season pitching the complete game win scattering eight hits eight five strikeouts.
In the second game of the day, the Monarchs jumped out to a similar lead scoring early with a sacrifice fly from Such in the first to score
Shawn Lovette. Lovette followed up with a two-RBI double in the second to score
Matt Quick and
Tyler Younger. Younger hit a double of his own in the third to score two runs and give Methodist the 5-0 lead.
Xavier Mayo drew the lead off walk in the fourth and Lovette drove a triple down the right field line for the RBI. Lancaster followed up with a ground out to score Lovette. The Monarchs added an insurance run in the sixth with a two-out rally. Lancaster was hit by a pitch and Inghram doubled off the fence in right for the 8-0 win.
Sean Willingham gave up just three hits for the complete game win on the mound.
Lovette was 3-for-4 with three RBI and Younger finished 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Methodist and Stevenson will be back at Armstrong-Shelley on Sunday at 12 p.m. for the third and final game of the series.
