LEXINGTON, Va. - Nationally ranked Washington and Lee battled the Methodist women's soccer team for nearly 80 minutes before cracking the defense with the eventual game-winning goal. The Monarchs lost their first game of the season 1-0.
The first half passed with neither team having many opportunities. Methodist goalkeeper
Kasey Nichols made two saves while the Monarchs' offense worked to break through the Generals' defense.

Lisa Paschal took the Monarchs' first shot in the 78th minute but the shot sailed wide. The Generals responded with a goal at the other end from Taylor Garrett.
The Washington and Lee defense held on for the shutout to win 1-0. Nichols finished with seven saves for the Monarchs.
Methodist will host Marietta on Saturday at 4 p.m.
