DANVILLE, Va. - The Methodist University men's basketball team never trailed as they used a 17-point halftime lead to cruise to the 84-65 win over Averett on Wednesday.
Bryan Hockaday scored the first basket of the game and the Monarchs never looked back as they dominated Averett. Methodist took the 7-0 lead early before Averett scored their first basket of the game with 17:08 remaining in the half. The Monarchs led by as many as 18 points in the half before taking a 45-28 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Cougars never moved within less than 13 points during the second half as Methodist maintained control. Senior
Travis Fulp capped off a 12-5 run midway through the second half to put the Monarchs up 72-52 with less than seven minutes remaining. Methodist finished with the 84-65 win.
Mark Jernigan led the team with 19 points while
Kyle Combs added 16 points and a team-high five rebounds. Fulp added 14 points and
Terrell Stallings scored back-to-back double figure points with 10 points against the Cougars.
Marquis Scott paced the Cougars with 21 points.
Methodist will be back on the road this weekend when they travel to LaGrange for a 2 p.m. tip-off Saturday.
