FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Methodist battled nationally ranked Christopher Newport, but the Captains slipped by with the 69-61 victory.
Methodist (8-8, 6-3) opened up the 15-9 lead midway through the first half with a layup from
Emily Huneycutt. Christopher Newport came back and tied the game at 18 with 5:17 to play. The Captains went on an 11-0 run to move ahead 29-20. CNU led by as many as 12 before Huneycutt drained two 3-pointers in the final minute to cut the lead to six points.
Christopher Newport went up by 10 points early in the second half, but Methodist came back and tied the game at 48 with 8:18 remaining on a steal and fastbreak layup by
Brianna Robinson. CNU's Chelsie Schweers countered with a 3-pointer, but
Jackie Lyles came right back with a 3-pointer on the other end. Methodist trailed by six with 43 seconds to play, but Methodist came up empty as the Captains prevailed with the 69-61 victory.
Lyles led the team with 16 points and nine rebounds while Huneycutt added 14 points.
Dawn Sanderson added nine rebounds.
Schweers finished with 27 points for Christopher Newport with seven 3-pointers.
Methodist will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Meredith at 7 p.m.
