FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Methodist and Christopher Newport were tied at 68 with 1:46 remaining in the game, but the Captains edged out the 77-74 win.
Christopher Newport opened up the 5-0 lead, but the Monarchs came right back with eight straight points from
Terrell Stallings to take the lead. The game was tied at 27 with 3:25 to play, but Methodist closed the half on a 10-1 run to lead 37-28.
The Captains came back and tied the game at 49 with 11:11 left in the game. There were five ties and five lead changes in the second half.
Bryan Hockaday drained two free throws with 1:46 remaining to tie the game at 66. Christopher Newport went up by six with 24 seconds on the clock, but Methodist battled back. Stallings hit the fadeaway 3-pointer with eight seconds on the clock with eight seconds left to cut the lead to two. CNU's Conley Taylor hit his first free throw, but missed the second to leave the Monarchs trailing by three with 4.5 seconds. Methodist tried to inbound the ball for one final play, but a scramble near the sideline forced a Monarch turnover and allowed the Captains to hold on for the 77-74 win.
Stallings led with 22 points and Hockaday scored 17 points with nine rebounds.
Josh Hayes added 12 points while
Kyle Combs finished with the double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Conley Taylor paced the Captains with 22 points.
Methodist will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Greensboro for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
