Box Score DANVILLE, Va. - The Monarchs fell behind early and tried to capitalize on last minute heroics once again, but Averett outlasted Methodist to win 4-3 in the first round of the USA South Tournament.
Averett jumped out to the quick 2-0 lead in the first four minutes. Sandra Johansson scored the first goal and Mathilda Hansson followed up with a goal in the fourth minute
for the Cougars. Pernilla Milton extended Averett's lead to three in the 26th minute before Methodist got on the board in the 32nd minute with a goal from
Jessie Oder. The Monarchs came out strong in the second half with a goal in the first six minutes to cut the lead to one.
Jillian Reed fed a long cross to
Danielle Minichello for the goal. Averett scored again in the 72nd minute to take the 4-2 lead.
Kristin Habig moved the Monarchs within one again with a goal in the 89th minute. Minichello and
Marissa Kuzbyt had two final shot opportunities looking for the game-tying goal, but Averett held on for the 4-3 win.
Sara Altman made six saves for the Monarchs while Samantha Lupo had three stops for Averett.
Averett advances to the USA South Tournament semifinals on Friday while the Monarchs wrap up their season 8-10-2.
