Box Score MARIETTA, Ohio - In a game that featured 20 lead changes, Kenyon College slipped by the Monarchs with the 79-77 win.
Kenyon (2-0) built a 32-25 lead with 4:52 remaining in the first half, but Methodist came back with a 13-4 run down the stretch to lead 38-36 at the break. The Monarchs (0-3) started strong in the second half and took an eight point lead in the first six minutes.
Terrell Stallings drove in for the layup and converted the free throw after getting fouled. The Lords scored eight straight points to tie the game at 48 and the game continued to go back and forth.
Kenyon led 75-70 with a minute to play, but
Mark Jernigan came back with a 3-pointer at the other end. Both teams exchanged baskets before Methodist's
Blake Lanier tied the game at 77 with 12 seconds remaining. The Lords called a timeout and converted on their final possession to take the 79-77 lead. Methodist tried to run one final play, but came up short.
James Whitehead led the Monarchs with 25 points on 9-for-13 shooting from the field.
Terrell Stallings notched a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds while
Mark Jernigan added 10 points.
Kenyon had four players in double figures paced by Ikenna Nwadibia with 18 points.
At the conclusion of the Marietta Shrine Tournament, Whitehead was one of five players named to the All-Tournament team.
The Monarchs will be back in action on Tuesday when they host No. 23 Hampden-Sydney College at 7 p.m.
