Women's Basketball Comes Up Short in Overtime

Box Score DEMOREST, Ga. - Methodist's Emily Huneycutt drained a 3-pointer with 4.5 seconds left to send the game to overtime, but Piedmont College came back to edge the Monarchs 76-71.

The Monarchs (2-1) jumped out to the 17-4 lead through the first six minutes with a layup by Jackie Lyles. Methodist maintained a 13 point lead with five and a half minutes left in the first half, but the Lions (1-0) chipped away at the lead before closing the gap to 34-29 at halftime.

Piedmont moved within two points with 16:06 to play in the game, but Lyles came right back with a jumper followed by a 3-pointer from Huneycutt to extend the Monarchs' lead back to seven. The Lions tied the game at 46 before taking their first lead of the game at 61-60 with 2:10 remaining. With 18 seconds left, Piedmont's Lauren Hamel hit two free throws to lead 65-52, but Huneycutt came through with the clutch 3-pointer to send the game to overtime. Piedmont hit the first basket in extra time and held on to win 76-71 over the Monarchs.

Lyles led the team with 19 points while Christina Schrader scored 17 points and Huneycutt finished with 13 points. T.T. Taylor had eight points and a team-high 11 rebounds.

Sada Wheeler paced the Lions with 18 points and 21 rebounds.

Methodist will be back in action next Saturday when they host The College of New Jersey at 8 p.m. at the Riddle Center.
