Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Methodist trailed by nine points with five minutes to play and went on a 12-2 run to take the lead with 2:23 on the clock. The Monarchs held on to win 81-79 over No. 23 Hampden-Sydney College.
Hampden-Sydney (2-1) jumped out to the quick 22-12 lead through the first nine minutes after six Methodist turnovers early. The Monarchs (1-3) battled back and cut the lead to three with a
Bryan Hockaday jumper at 29-26.
James Whitehead moved the Monarchs within one with less than two minutes in the first half, but Hampden-Sydney took a 38-34 lead into the lockerroom at halftime.
The Monarchs came out firing in the second half and led 42-40 early. Methodist led 54-46 before the Tigers went on a 12-0 run to regain the lead. Hampden-Sydney held the 71-62 lead with 5:25 on the clock, but the Monarchs started chipping away at the lead finishing 5-for-6 from the free throw line down the stretch to win 81-79.
Whitehead paced the team with 19 points while Hockaday and
Mark Jernigan had 18 apiece. Hockaday had 10 boards for a double-double.
Terrell Stallings added 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Randall Ward led Hampden-Sydney with 21 points on 7-for-10 shooting from behind the 3-point line.
Methodist will be back in action on Saturday when they host Piedmont College at 2 p.m.
