Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist men's basketball team used an 18-2 run midway through the second half to come from behind and knock off Piedmont College 75-66.
Piedmont came out with a quick 7-4 lead, but Methodist tied the game at seven with a layup by
James Whitehead. The Lions (1-1) led by as many as six points before the Monarchs came back to take the 22-21 lead on a layup from
Matthew Snowberger. Piedmont moved ahead 34-31 in the final minute, but Whitehead cut the lead to one at halftime with two free throws.
Piedmont opened the second half strong and led by 46-38 after the first five minutes. The Monarchs moved within five, but with 13:52 remaining the Lions maintained the 50-43 advantage. Methodist responded with an 18-2 run over the next six minutes to build a nine point cushion. Piedmont trimmed the lead to one with 2:04 on the clock, but Methodist finished 8-for-12 from the free throw line down the stretch to secure the 75-66 win.
Whitehead led the team with 23 points while
Mark Jernigan added 17 points.
Bryan Hockaday had eight points with a team-high 12 rebounds.
Josh Haymore and Dylan Delaney paced the Lions with 12 points apiece.
Methodist will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Maryville College.
