Box Score FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Methodist made another second half comeback on Sunday afternoon, but West Georgia slipped by the Monarchs in the final seconds 61-59.
The Wolves (11-1) opened the game with the 20-6 lead after the first eight minutes of action, but Methodist came back with a 16-3 run to cut the lead to one in the final two minutes. West Georgia stopped the run with two baskets late to lead 27-22 at halftime.
Methodist (3-7) took their first lead of the game three minutes into the second half with a jumper by
Matthew Snowberger. The Wolves regained the lead at 32-31, but Methodist went on a 10-0 run capped off by a layup from
Dervin Johnson to lead 41-32. The Monarchs held another nine point lead at 46-37, but West Georgia came back with nine straight points to tie the game. Methodist's
Mark Jernigan came back with a 3-pointer at the other end to keep the Monarchs on top. The two teams exchanged baskets through the final minutes, but Methodist took a four point lead at 59-55 with 2:19 to play. The Wolves came back with two baskets to tie the game at 59 with 1:03 remaining. The Monarchs came up empty with their first shot and West Georgia grabbed the rebound with 39 seconds on the clock giving a four second difference between the game clock and shot clock. The Wolves scored a layup in the final seconds of the shot clock giving Methodist just four seconds to set up their offense. The Monarchs came up empty giving West Georgia the 61-59 win.
Jernigan led Methodist with 20 points and six rebounds.
James Whitehead and
Kyle Combs added 11 points apiece.
Methodist will take a break for the holidays before resuming action at Washington and Lee Dec. 29-30.
