Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Methodist women (4-3, 1-1) held off the 19th ranked Christopher Newport Captains on Saturday, 64-60, snapping a 41-game home winning streak dating back to the 2009 season. CNU falls to 5-1 with its first setback of the year, and 1-1 in league play.
The Captains used an early 13-2 run to open up the early lead and led by as many as 11 in the game, opening up a 20-9 advantage with just over nine minutes remaining in the first half.
Both teams suffered through some sloppy play and poor shooting in the first half, with Christopher Newport coming out on top with a 32-26 lead at the break. After halftime, the Captains regained a 10-point lead with under 16 minutes remaining. Methodist went on a 14-2 run over the next nine minutes of play as the Monarchs were powered by their full court press in the second half.
The two teams traded baskets for much of the latter portion of the second half until
T.T. Taylor knocked down a big three-pointer of an assist by
Jackie Lyles. The trey gave Methodist an eight-point lead, their largest of the game, with 2:17 remaining.
CNU came back and moved within three at 58-55 with 1:10 remaining, but Methodist would knock down enough free-throws down the stretch to hold off the Captains.
Jackie Lyles led the way for Methodist, with 21 points and eight rebounds, while also grabbing four steals and a block.
Christina Schrader added 13 points while
Iesha Hayes had nine points and three steals.
The Captains were led by Jerlisa Bowser's 13 points, adding six rebounds. Kelly Halverson finished with 12 points and three boards, while sophomore guard Tia Perry grabbed a game-high 12 boards to go with seven points and four assists.
Methodist will be back in action when they take on nearby Apprentice on Sunday at 2 p.m.
