Gettysburg Slips by Monarchs

Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. - The Methodist men's basketball team took on Gettysburg College in the consolation game of the Washington and Lee Tournament. The game went back and forth before the Bullets edged the Monarchs 84-72.

The first half alone featured 14 lead changes and neither team led by more than five points. Gettysburg (5-5) went ahead 35-30 in the final minute, but Methodist's James Whitehead came back with a 3-pointer at the other end to cut the lead to two at halftime.

Methodist (3-9) tied the game at 37 early in the second half, but the Bullets went on a 16-0 run to lead 53-37 with 12:47 left in the game. Gettysburg led by as many as 22 points before the Monarchs chipped away at the lead. Whitehead hit a jumper with 2:52 remaining to move the Monarchs within 11 points. Bryan Hockaday's free throw cut the lead to 11 again, but the Bullets finished with the 84-72 win.

Methodist improved their shooting on Friday finishing at 46 percent from the field, but Gettysburg was 60 percent from the field in the second half as they pulled away.

Whitehead led the Monarchs with 20 points while Joey Horne finished with 17 ponts and Mark Jernigan had 14 points. Hockaday added 12 points and a team-high five rebounds.

Joe Emerusabe led the Bullets with 17 points.

Methodist will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Christopher Newport University at 7 p.m. in their USA South Athletic Conference opener.
