Box Score NORFOLK, Va. - Third ranked Virginia Wesleyan College jumped out to the quick lead and cruised to a 94-62 win over Methodist University on Tuesday.
The Marlins were the third nationally ranked team the Monarchs faced this season after splitting with Marietta College and Hampden-Sydney College.
Virginia Wesleyan went on a 9-0 run through the first five minutes to take the 17-4 lead. The Monarchs went 9-for-28 from the field in the first half as the Marlins opened up the 40-10 advantage. Methodist closed out the final six minutes on a 14-6 run to cut the lead to 22. The Monarchs played a much tighter second half, but the deficit was too large as Virginia Wesleyan finished with the 94-62 win.
James Whitehead led the Monarchs with 18 points while
Mark Jernigan added 10 points.
Bryan Hockaday,
Tyler Deal and
Joey Horne added seven points apiece.
Chris Teasley paced the Marlins with 21 points.
Methodist will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to NCAA Division I Campbell University for a 1 p.m. tip-off.
