WINCHESTER, Va. - The Methodist women's basketball team bounced back from a tough loss Friday to earn the 66-62 win over Shenandoah on Saturday in the regular season finale.
Methodist scored the first points of the game, but it was Shenandoah who led for most of the first half. The Hornets were ahead 20-14 before Methodist went on a 7-1 run to tie the game at 21. The Monarchs kept the pressure on in the final minutes of the half before taking a 29-26 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Monarchs led by as many as 11 points in the second half, but Shenandoah came back and trailed by one with 4:13 remaining in the game.
Iesha Hayes responded with a 3-pointer at the other end and the Monarchs finished 5-for-6 from the free throw line in the final minutes to secure the 66-62 win.
Dawn Sanderson led the team with 16 points and eight rebounds while Hayes finished with 15 points including four 3-pointers.
Sierra Edwards paced the Hornets with 24 points.
The Monarchs finished the regular season as the No. 4 seed in the USA South Tournament with the chance to host fifth seeded Averett University on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
