MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Methodist baseball team picked up their second win this week with a 16-2 win over Swarthmore College.
Swarthmore held the Monarchs scoreless in the first inning, but
Trey Such led off the second with a walk and moved to second on
Brandon Thigpen's bunt single.
Chris Perry reached on a fielder's choice that moved Such to third and Such scored the first run of the game on a single from
Dustin Brown.
Shawn Lovette had a ground-rule double in the third and stole third before scoring on a wild pitch to give Methodist the 2-0 lead after three innings.
The Monarchs capitalized on two defensive errors in the fourth inning combined with three hits from Brown, Lovette and
Brian Inghram to rattle off five runs. Swarthmore loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth, but
Rett Lee forced the Garnet into a double play to hold them scoreless. Methodist added two runs in the fifth and three in the seventh before Swarthmore got on the board with a run in the bottom of the seventh.
Methodist added four runs in the ninth thanks in part to a three-run bomb from Such to give the Monarchs the 16-1 lead. Swarthmore tacked on a run in the bottom of the ninth, but Methodist finished with the 16-2 win.
Brown finished 4-for-5 with three RBI. Lovette went 3-for-4 with three RBI while Thigpen and Perry added two hits a piece.
Rett Lee pitched five scoreless innings to earn the win with three strikeouts.
Jaron Cayton,
Josh Ayers and
Rusty White finished in relief.
The Monarchs will be back in action tomorrow when they host Keystone at 6 p.m.
