Box Score WINCHESTER, Va. - Methodist took the early lead, but Shenandoah controlled the second half before earning the 81-72 victory.
The Monarchs (3-13, 0-4) scored the first six points of the game, but Shenandoah (4-13, 2-3) came back to take the 9-8 lead after four minutes of action. The game was tied twice before the Hornets built a nine point lead at 35-26. Methodist came back with a 13-3 run to take the lead on two free throws from
Kyle Combs. Shenandoah scored the next four points to lead 42-39 at the break.
Midway through the second half the Hornets took their largest lead of the game at 60-49, but the Monarchs scored the next nine points to move back within two points. Shenandoah went back up by 10 on two different occasions, and led 75-66 with 2:37 remaining. A 3-pointer from
Steven Kerr trimmed the lead to six, but the Hornets came back with a basket at the other end.
Mark Jernigan fed
Tyler Farias for his second 3-pointer of the game to cut the lead to five with 1:18 to play. The Monarchs missed their next four shots and were forced to foul and send Shenandoah to the free throw line where they secured the 81-72 victory.
James Whitehead led the Monarchs with 18 points and added 10 rebounds. Jernigan scored 16 points while
Bryan Hockaday scored 12 points and grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds.
Avery Green paced the Hornets with 17 points while James Bowens added 13 points.
Methodist will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Ferrum at 7:30 p.m.
