Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Ferrum took the early lead, but Methodist took the lead for good midway through the first half and never looked back as they broke a 10-game losing streak with a 73-63 win over the Panthers.
Ferrum (9-7, 2-3) came out firing early and took the 15-11 lead in the first six minutes, but Methodist (4-13, 1-4) came back and tied the game at 16 with a 3-pointer by
James Whitehead. Methodist took control through the latter part of the half taking their largest lead of the game on a layup from
Terrell Stallings at 35-28 with 1:10 on the clock. There were eight lead changes through the first 10 minutes of action, before the Monarchs took over and led 35-31 at halftime.
The Panthers trimmed the lead to two to start the second half, but Methodist went on a 14-0 run midway through the period to lead 60-41 with 8:22 left to play. Methodist used contributions from multiple players and out scored Ferrum 22-6 in the paint during the second half. The Panthers cut the lead to 10 on four different occasions in the last four minutes, but Methodist kept battling to earn the 73-63 win.
Whitehead finished with a team-high 24 points while
Bryan Hockaday had 12 points, seven rebounds and six blocks.
Mark Jernigan added 10 points while
Kyle Combs had eight points and nine rebounds.
Marcus Mayo paced Ferrum with 22 points and 11 boards to lead the team.
Methodist will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to N.C. Wesleyan College for a 4 p.m. tip-off.
