Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Greensboro College led early, but Methodist used an 11-0 run midway through the first half to take control and outlast the Pride 84-81 in overtime.
The Pride (12-6, 4-2) built a nine point lead through the first 10 minutes of play and looked to have things in control before Methodist put together an 11-0 run capped off by a jumper from
Matthew Snowberger to put the Monarchs up 25-23. The game went back and forth with everything tied up at 28, but Methodist closed the half on a 13-4 run to lead 41-32 at the break.
Greensboro cut the lead to five early, but the Monarchs (5-14, 2-5) battled to take their largest lead of the game at 55-40 with 14:49 on the clock. The Pride moved within four points on three different occasions, but Methodist always responded. The Monarchs nearly gave it away late with three turnovers and three fouls in the final two minutes, but
James Whitehead hit two clutch free throws with 44 seconds on the clock to give Methodist a 75-72 cushion. Greensboro's Devonta Davis tied the game with a 3-pointer with 18 seconds on the clock, and Chakiris Moss blocked the Monarchs final attempt to send the game to overtime.
Methodist's
Mark Jernigan set the tone for overtime when he drove to the lane and hit a pull-up jumper. After two misses at the other end for the Pride, Jernigan drove down the court for a quick layup and the four point advantage. Greensboro scored three free throws to move within one, but Methodist's
Bryan Hockaday put the Monarchs back up by three. The Pride came back with a quick basket, but Jernigan drained a 3-pointer to regain the four point lead. The Pride went 1-for-2 at the line in the final minute and still had a chance to tie the game, but the shot rimmed out giving Methodist the 84-81 win and their second conference victory and second consecutive win at home.
Jernigan finished with 28 points for the Monarchs including seven of the team's nine points in overtime. Whitehead added 21 points while
Terrell Stallings had 10 points. Hockaday notched seven points and a team-high 14 rebounds.
Damian Dixon paced the Pride with 17 points while Brian Thomas finished with 11.
Methodist will step out of conference play this weekend when they travel to Lynchburg College for a 2 p.m. tip-off on Saturday.
