Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Methodist women's basketball team had a 10 point lead early in the second half, but Greensboro battled back to narrowly slip by the Monarchs 68-64.
Both teams exchanged baskets early on before the Monarchs (8-9, 5-5) put together a steady rally midway through the first half. With 6:46 remaining,
Emily Huneycutt drained a 3-pointer to put Methodist ahead 31-21. The Pride (12-3, 8-2) had a late run and moved within three, but Methodist's
Iesha Hayes responded with a jumper in the final seconds to give the Monarchs the 38-33 halftime advantage.
Methodist came out strong in the second half with a 10-3 run and
Jordan Tyson's layup put MU up 48-36 with 15:13 remaining. The Monarchs were ahead 50-40 when Greensboro scored nine straight points to move within one. The Pride tied the game at 56 and it was tied three different times late in the game before Greensboro took the two point lead on two free throws with 43 seconds on the clock. The Monarchs' possession came up empty and they were forced to foul, but the Pride finished with two additional free throws to secure the 68-64 win.
Jackie Lyles led Methodist with 14 points and eight rebounds while
T.T. Taylor added 12 points.
Iesha Hayes and Tyson notched 11 apiece.
Danielle Duncan paced the Pride with 20 points while Bianca Richburg cinished with 16.
Methodist will be back in action on Saturday when they host Christopher Newport University at 2 p.m.
