Box Score DANVILLE, Va. - The Methodist women's basketball team led by as many as 11 points, but Averett University came from behind with a late run to win 50-45.
The Monarchs started slow in their first game back in almost a month, but slowly built a 25-15 advantage with 3:01 remaining in the first half. The Cougars came back with six straight points to trail 25-21 at halftime.
Methodist came back out strong in the second half and led 33-22 in the first five minutes. Averett tied it up at 36 with 5:13 to go but Methodist's
Iesha Hayes came back with a jumper at the other end for the Monarchs to maintain their lead. Methodist went back up by five, but the game was tied again at 44 and 44 before the Cougars went ahead 48-44. Methodist's
Emily Huneycutt got to the free throw line and hit her first free throw, but the Monarchs came up empty down the stretch as Averett prevailed with the 50-45 win.
T.T. Taylor led the Monarchs with 12 points and eight rebounds while
Jackie Lyles added 11 points and seven rebounds.
Liz Martin led the Cougars with 13 points and 14 rebounds.
Methodist will be back in action on Saturday when they play at Shenandoah University at 2 p.m.
