Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Methodist women's soccer team recorded a 2-0 over N.C. Wesleyan and secured a spot in the USA South Conference Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at the Monarch Soccerplex.

The Monarchs, who finished the regular season at 7-12-0 and 5-6-0 in the USA South, earned the eighth and final spot in the tournament and denied the Battling Bishops (6-10-1, 3-8-0) a spot in the tourney. Had the Battling Bishops won, the roles would have been reversed with the Monarchs missing out on the postseason and N.C. Wesleyan advancing.

Cassandra Walter started the scoring in the 36th minute as she converted a one-on-one situation with NCWC's Hailey Hopkins, deking to her left to slip a shot past Hopkins for a 1-0 lead.

In the second half, it was Walter setting up Kristin Habig, one of four players playing in their final game at home, for a goal and a 2-0 lead as MU eased to the win.

Taylor Ross made three saves, all in the first half, for MU in picking up her second shutout of the season. Hopkins made five saves for the Battling Bishops in playing the first half. Vanessa Batchelor played the second half and made three saves as NCWC was outshot 20-8.

The Monarchs will now face top-seeded Averett University on Sunday at 11:30 am.
