Averett Knocks off Methodist, 5-1, in USA South Quarterfinals

DANVILLE, Va. -- Pernila Milton scored three goals and the top-seeded Averett Cougars knocked off  the No. 8 Methodist women's soccer team in the quarterfinal round of the USA South Conference Tournament on Sunday afternoon.

Milton opened the scoring in the 27th minute as Suvi Piipponen and Charlotte Thibault set her up for the game's first goal and an early 1-0 lead. Under two minutes later Sandra Johannson made it 2-0 in favor of the Cougars as Piipponen assisted on the goal once again.

MU's Caity Clarke halved the Monarchs' deficit at the 37:08 mark, scoring an unassisted goal to bring Methodist to within 2-1 heading into the half. However, Averett put the game out of reach on Milton's second goal of the game at the 53:40 mark and two goals in the final two minutes, including another tally by Milton accounted for the final 5-1 score.

In addition to Milton's hat trick, Johannson finished with five points on two goals and an assist.

The Cougars outshot Methodist 20-8 on the day as Taylor Ross made two saves in net for the Monarchs. Malin Borjesson stopped two shots as well for Averett.

With the loss, the Monarchs wrap up the 2012 campaign with an overall record of 7-13, while Averett advances to next weekend's semifinal round in Martinsville, Va.
