Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Methodist's James Whitehead scored a season-high 24 points, but the Washington and Lee men's basketball team drilled 13 three pointers in knocking off the Monarchs, 102-71, on Tuesday evening at the Riddle Center.

Whitehead connected on 8-of-14 shots from the field for the Monarchs (0-2), including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc, but it was the Generals' three-point shooting that proved to the be difference. W&L (2-1) made good on 13-of-21 attempts from deep, including a 4-for-5 showing from Kevin Gill.

After a layup by the Monarchs' Bryan Hockaday trimmed an early W&L lead to one (20-19) with 9:30 to play in the opening half, the Generals reeled off a 15-4 run, including seven points from Andrew Franz, to assume a 35-23 lead with 4:47 left until halftime. Shortly after that, a triple by Whitehead made it a nine-point game (37-28), and after the Generals extended their lead back to 15, a quick 6-0 MU spurt before the break put the Monarchs down just nine points (43-34) at the break.

Methodist pulled as close as seven points (50-43) on a Whitehead jumper with 15:13 left in the second period, but W&L answered with a game-clinching 26-7 scoring run over the next 5:44 to take a 76-50 lead by the 9:29 mark in cruising to the win. The Generals made 11-of-17 shots, including three triples, during the run.

For the game, Methodist shot 45.5 percent (30-66) from the field turned the ball over just 10 times. The Generals countered with a 52.6 percent (40-76) mark from the floor and turned it over just eight times while out rebounding the Monarchs, 45-28.

In addition to Whitehead's game-high 24 points, Hockaday added 14 points, eight rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Kyle Combs finished with four points, six boards, three assists and two steals.

Javon McDonald led the Generals with 19 points and five assists. Gill finished with 18 points, Franz 15, and Jonathan Rice tallied a double double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. J.D. Ey grabbed nine boards and added three assist, two blocks and two steals.

Methodist continues its early-season homestand on Monday, hosting No. 2 Virginia Wesleyan at 7:00 pm.
