Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Methodist trailed by as many as 13 points before mounting a late comeback to win 67-66 over Shenandoah University.
The Monarchs trailed by eight with less than three minutes on the clock before
Bryan Hockaday tied the game at 63 with 1:02 on the clock. Shenandoah came back with a 3-pointer at the other end and Methodist turned the ball over with 17 seconds on the clock. The Monarchs trapped the ball in the corner and
Mark Jernigan grabbed the steal and the quick layup to move Methodist within one. They were forced to foul late, but when the Hornets came up short at the free throw line, Hockaday grabbed the rebound and the Monarchs had 5.9 seconds to set up a final play.
Tyler Farias found Jernigan wide open at the edge of the paint for what would be the game-winning shot. Shenandoah had 3.1 seconds left, but could not get a clear shot giving Methodist the 67-66 win.
The first half found the Monarchs down by 10 after shooting just 9-for-33. Shenandoah led 31-21 at halftime and moved ahead 36-23 early in the second half. Methodist slowly chipped away at the lead closing the gap to two with 5:20 remaining. The Monarchs finished strong down the stretch using multiple players.
Methodist had five players finish in double figures paced by
James Whitehead with 14 points. Hockaday had 12 points and 15 rebounds while
Jake McSwain had a career-high 12 points to go along with six boards. Jernigan and
Justin Washington had 10 apiece.
Avery Green had 15 points to lead to the Hornets.
Methodist will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Greensboro College for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
