Methodist Comeback Falls Short at Greensboro

Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Methodist men's basketball made a second half comeback at Greensboro College Wednesday night for the second overtime contest with the Pride this season, but Greensboro finished with the 70-64 win.

The Monarchs trailed by one with 11:43 remaining in the first half before Greensboro rattled off eight straight points. The Pride put together back-to-back dunks in the final five minutes to extend their lead to 13 points. Methodist's Bryan Hockaday helped the Monarchs cut the lead to 10 at halftime with a layup.

With 13:13 left in the game, the Monarchs trailed 44-32 before going on a 10-0 run over the next five and a half minutes. Tyler Farias cut the Pride lead to two with a jumper before Greensboro ended their drought with two free throws at the 7:49 mark. The Pride went back up by six, but Methodist's James Whitehead tied the game at 48 with two free throws and Terrell Stallings gave the team their first lead of the game at 49-48. It was back and forth for the last five minutes with players continuing to hit clutch free throws. Greensboro led 58-56 when Whitehead tied the game back at 58 with 40 seconds remaining. Both teams had a final possession to break the tie, but came up empty.

Hockaday scored the first basket of overtime and the Monarchs led 62-61 before the Pride rattled off eight straight points to command the 69-62 advantage. Methodist's Mark Jernigan scored a late basket, but Greensboro held on for the 70-64 win.

Jernigan paced the team with 14 points while Hockaday finished with 13 points and 16 rebounds. Whitehead added 12 points and Stallings had 10 points.

Methodist will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Ferrum College for a 4 p.m. tip-off.
