Guilford Dispatches Methodist, 84-61, in Men's Hoops

Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Guilford College men's basketball team used a 25-6 scoring run that spanned halftime to down Methodist, 84-61, on Wednesday evening at the Riddle Center.

The Quakers (10-2) turned a 29-24 lead with 3:22 left in to the first half into a 54-30 advantage with just over five minutes gone in the second period. Guilford closed out the first half hitting five of its final seven shots from the floor, including a four-point play from Matt McCarthy on its final possession to take a 41-24 lead into the break.
 
McCarthy started the second half with another triple to push the Quakers' lead to 20 (44-24) and Josh Pittman gave GC a 24-point lead (54-30) with a jumper at the 14:54 mark. The Monarchs (3-7) responded with an 8-0 run to pull within 16 points (64-38) after a triple by Austin Pack at the 12:04. However, that would be as close as Methodist would pull as Guilford strung together eight consecutive points of their own to pull ahead 62-38 and cruise to the win.
 
In the first half, the Quakers used a 14-0 run to turn a two-point deficit (15-13) into a 27-15 lead at the 6:57 mark. Following a Methodist timeout, the Monarchs' Christian McRae drilled a three and Methodist put together a 9-2 run to pull within five (29-24) on a Kyle Combs layup before the Quakers' game-clinching run.
 
For the game, Methodist held Guilford to just 40.3 percent shooting (27-67), but the Quakers hit on 10-of-21 shots from beyond the arc (.471) and made good on 20-of-23 free throws. Methodist shot just 34.8 percent for the game (23-66) and only went to the line 13 times, making good on nine attempts. GC also held a 44-35 edge on the glass.
 
Keemon Ingram led the Monarchs with 10 points. McRae and Hockaday each totaled nine points, and Jake McSwain and Kyle Combs added eight apiece. Hockaday and Combs each grabbed a team-best six rebounds and Hockaday had four blocked shots.
 
McCarthy led all scorers with a game-high 21 points, coming on 6-of-9 shooting from deep. Zeb Richardson totaled 17 points and 15 rebounds, including 13 points and 11 rebounds in the first half. Ben Stevenson added 12 points off the bench and Jake Hopkins chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds. Pittman finished with 11 assists to go with six points and three steals.
 
The Monarchs return to action on Saturday when they host Christopher Newport at 4:00 pm.
