Monarchs Rally Past Ferrum, 73-60, in Men's Hoops

Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Methodist men's basketball team used a huge first-half surge to rally past Ferrum, 73-60, on Wednesday evening at the Riddle Center.
 
After falling behind by as many as 12 points (18-6) early in the first half, Justin Washington's three-point play at the 11:54 mark ignited an 18-4 scoring run for the Monarchs that gave Methodist a 24-22 lead by the 5:28 mark. Six different Monarchs scored during the run that saw them hit on 7-of-11 shots from the floor, including four straight at one point, while holding Ferrum to just 1-of-9 shooting with a pair of turnovers.
 
After Ferrum briefly regained the lead (25-24) on a JD Wallace triple with just under five minutes to play in the first half, Kyle Combs answered with a layup for the Monarchs and Methodist increased its lead to five (36-31) heading into the break.
 
In the second half, Methodist quickly built up a 10-point lead as Keemon Ingram knocked down a trio of three pointers to give the Monarchs a 47-37 advantage with 14:48 to play. Ferrum managed to pull to within five points (58-53) with 8:25 left to play and seemed poised to make a run at the Monarchs following an MU turnover. However, Bryan Hockaday came up with a steal at the other end which led to a layup by Desmond Parker and a free throw by Johnel Jones to put Methodist back up eight (61-53) with just 6:51 showing on the clock.
 
For the game, Methodist shot 45.3 percent from the floor (24-53) and 37.5 percent from deep (6-16) while turning the ball over just 12 times. Ferrum, which held a 34-32 edge on the boards, hit on 40.4 percent (23-57) of its shots from the floor and made just 4-of-12 attempts from beyond the arc while turning the ball over 20 times.
 
Brandon Monk and Austin Pack came off the bench to lead the Monarchs with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Ingram added nine and Jones finished with eight. Hockaday, Washington, Tabias Hilliard and Pack all grabbed a team-best four rebounds and Washington and Hilliard each handed out three assists. .
 
Jamal Pullen led all scorers with 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting. JD Wallace added 10 points and Pullen and Lamont King each grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
 
The Monarchs are back in action on Saturday when they play at Maryville at 4:00 pm.
